In Ocarina of Time I hardly ever used potions/milk/etc to heal. I almost always loaded my bottles up with fairies and let them auto heal me when I died. In ALTTP I use the fortune tellers just to heal since money is so easy to come by. There's also at least one potion shop that lets you have a 'sample' and I often walk in to get healed. When I'm up on death mountain I usually just go to the old guy to heal.
